Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail.
The firm will extend the warranty coverage from one to three years to compensate consumers, but does not plan to instate a recall or exchange programme.

Wonder if the extended guarantee is passed on if you sell your console. Nephew has just recently bought a second hand 360 from ebay!!!

Not sure. I'd like to know too as I'm seriously considering getting one in a couple of months and possibly second hand (not if I can afford new though).

Not very good of Microsoft to have design flaws in their 360s, but at lease they admitted it. I'm planning to pick up a 360 Elite when release or near Christmas; hopefully it won't have the problems.

I'm hoping that the release of the Elite console will bring prices for the standard machine down a little further.

You would think when Elite comes out; the Core and Premium would drop in price. I don’t see why not unless M$ are trying to make as much money as possible before Christmas, which could be the perfect time for a drop in price.

ALL games companies are in the industry to make money and achieve maximum sales. I don't see a problem with this, if you fail to be competitive you go bankrupt, it's simple economics.

Correct, and as you touched on in another comment, the more competitive the industry becomes, the greater becomes the need for originality and flair. It's an amazingly productive market right now, shaking off the signs of stagance that were appearing a few years back. It's so influential to see so many innovative concepts in the pipeline (i.e. the wii fitness board thing) and to see how skillfully the market is being manipulated to not just identify and sell to the gameplaying demographic, but to expand into a dormant market of prospective gamesplayers. Nintendo are pulling out some pretty ***y rabbits from their talented magic hats, fuelled by their want to better the competition.
Thanks to Sony and Microsoft for re-energising the market.

I see where you're coming from, and i'm no fan of the rivals either, but if they help Nintendo strive to do better then let's just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
You can't beat a debate en mass! (Don't rearrange that sentence please)

I understand what you mean Ben, the 360 and PS3 being aim at a similar audience. But I personally would own a Wii and 360 at this moment in time because I feel they're totally different from each other and got better games then PS3 overall for myself.
With games like these which are coming out for just Wii:
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption,
Super Smash Bros Brawl,
Super Mario Galaxy,
Mario Kart Wii,
Super Paper Mario,
Battalion Wars II,
No More Heroes,
and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
And games like these which are coming out for just 360
Banjo Kazoorie 3,
Mass Effect,
Blue Dragon,
Halo 3,
Fable 2,
BioShock,
Alan Wake,
and Splinter Cell: Conviction
All of them together equal the perfect gaming collection for me.

Its happened! sony and microsoft have started to copy nintendo with the family friendly thing, with sony announcing new family games and microsoft anouncing games like scene it which work with a new controller with 4 big buttons. HOW BLOODY DARE THEY!!!!they went for the graphic hardcore gamer way and theyve failed, so now there going to copy nintendo to try and make the same succes out of the wider audience.
Please excuse the language but this needs to be said.
THE SLIMY *******S!!!

I'd rather have a 360 over a PS3 anyday though, gears of war ftw and thats why i have one lol. 24 August eh? Same day as Bioshocks release. You should get that if your getting the elite on the same day.

You really can't forget assassins creed and valves orange box for the 360 even though they are coming out for the ps3 too, 360 really has got the upperhand on PS3 atm cos alot of they're exclusive games are multi platform now like haze, GTA and theres even rumors of metal gear solid 4 for 360.

I love the games on 360 but the problem I find is that the Xbox Live subscription is abit pricey for me, say I pay £35 per year for the whole normal console generation which is about 5 years. So £35 times 5 equals £175, which I could get a Wii for here (http://www.shopto.net/page.php?page=dettagli&matcat=&categ=&platform=&codart=WIICO00)
I think I would rather buy a Wii then Xbox Live.

I would get a 360 but this design fault runis it, someone i knows 360 buat the other day, and cos most of its best games are 15 or 18+ which meens it would be really hard for me to get hold of em, and franksta's right xbox live is really expensive
budtom
16-07-2007, 09:21 PM
Well it's just the price of a game really and it lets you unlock bigger potential in your games. By the time the warrenty runs out in 3 years, i think that if it's going to break it would have done and by then i think alot of people will be thinking more about the next generation especially with microsoft releasing the 360 before everyone else. Not a big concern for me, if it breaks i get it fixed.

they shouldnt have rushed it out
budtom
16-07-2007, 09:55 PM
Well yeah thats true at least they extended the warrenty, i highly doubt my machine will die though, i think it's more likely for people who don't take as good care. like moving it with the drive open etc.

Lol yeah exactly if you look after your machine everything should be ok, i think people leave their 360's on for too long, like over 24 hours, obviously thats not a smart thing to do.

After over a year of the console being out, that design fault has probably been reduced to about 2% of consoles. And you're only mentioning it because Microsoft did, otherwise you wouldn't.

We are on our 3rd 360's and its still my mans baby. We got one swapped and had to send one to Microsoft. They told us that you are supposed to turn the thing off every 2 hours to allow it to cool down. What a load of rubbish that is, how many people in the middle of a game are going to turn off their xbox to allow it to cool? It is typical of MS to rush something out in order to make money or beat a rival. Its a bit childish. Its still an amazing console though.
When we sent ours away to get replaced the customer service people were good with us. Just the hold times were a bit silly, 45 mins on one occasion, at least its freephone. There was one time that we had a problem and we were immediately put on to a customer relations person who sent us out a wireless controller to say sorry. Ace!

yup, we got the ring of death. It was buzzing/whirring quite loud too. Someone said that there is a way to fix the ring of death posted on youtube but I don't know if it works or if I would recommend it. I know of someone who has wrapped theirs with towels to keep it cool as they also have the ring of death. I dont see how this would work..... I would just send the box back and get a new one from xbox.

I know 3 people who own a 360 and they have all had to send their consoles off for repair now, so its proof that this is a problem with the Xbox. Fair play to Microsoft, they have a great support service and all these broken 360's have been repaired very quickly.

LOL......next time you turn your 360 on you're gonna be worried that the ring of death will plague you :p
The best one is that two people I know both had this problem just when Halo 3 came out, so they had to wait for their 360's to get repaired before they could play it :D

its a shame when it happens though and when you do get that ring of death it haunts you forever more. My mans constantly asking me to stop breathing so he can have complete silence to listen to the hum of his box to make sure it sounds ok lol. I think its a problem shared by Sony and MS. I do not have a PS3 yet so I cannot comment on that but the original xbox was riddled with design flaws as they rushed it out to beat the PS2. I can remember reports of melting power cables and the likes and when I got my PS2 I went through about 4 of them in 6 months (same problem in all of them, motor kept over working and burning out), luckly enough I purchased a warranty so I was able to return the faulty one and take home a working one the same day direct from the shop. Its all about money isn't it? grr
